The Breed
The South African Boerboel
A powerful, athletic farm guardian from South Africa — bred to think, to discriminate, and to protect. Here is what decades around working dogs have taught us about the breed.

Temperament
Coupled with intelligence, a well-bred Boerboel will naturally fulfill its instinctive protective role through socialization and proper exposure — without any encouragement. This is a loyal, loving, lifelong friend with a tractable disposition, and it is also a dog that likes a job, whether that's keeping the couch warm or the fence line.
Size & presence
The Boerboel is a large, powerful mastiff — males commonly stand 24–27 inches at the shoulder and can exceed 150 pounds of athletic muscle. Their stature alone is often enough to dissuade an unwanted intruder; their presence is calm, confident, and deliberate rather than nervous or reactive.
Working & guardian heritage
The Boerboel was developed in South Africa as a farm dog — protecting homesteads, families, and livestock in demanding conditions. That heritage produced a dog with the intelligence to distinguish friend from foe and the physical ability to back up its judgment.
Ownership considerations
A Boerboel is an animal of prowess. It is important to establish boundaries and authority when dealing with a dog of this stature. If you haven't had much experience with dogs, attend shows or exhibitions where you can see a Boerboel firsthand before taking on the responsibility of ownership.
Training & socialization
Start early and stay consistent. Boerboels are intelligent and tractable, which makes them a pleasure to train — but their size means manners are not optional. Regular exposure to people, places, and other animals shapes the stable, discerning guardian the breed is meant to be.
